Photodynamic Therapy

South Shore MA Blue Light TherapyPhotodynamic therapy, also known as blue light therapy, can be used for the treatment of acne or sun-damaged skin. Below is information on our South Shore MA blue light therapy services.

Blue Light Acne Treatment

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a non‐invasive special treatment performed with a topical photo‐sensitizing agent called aminolevulinic acid (Levulan, Dusa Pharmaceuticals). Levulan solution is applied to the skin and then activated by a specific wavelength of light (blue light). Activation of Levulan reduces the burden of inflammatory lesions, that results in improvement of acne. Additionally, PDT is also used for other inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis, lichen planus, and hidradenitis suppurativa.

Blue Light Treatment for Sun-Damaged Skin

PDT is an effective therapy for photodamaged skin. An improvement of lentigines (sunspots), skin roughness, sallow complexion and fine wrinkles with PDT has been demonstrated. The clinical improvement is associated with a reduction of histological signs of photoaging that makes PDT an appealing modality for photorejuvenation.
