Sclerotherapy

GK Dermatology provides Sclerotherapy treatments in Weymouth MA. Below is some helpful information on sclerotherapy and what you should expect during and after treatments.

What is sclerotherapy?

It is a popular established method of eliminating varicose veins and superficial telangiectasias (“spider veins”), in which a solution, called a sclerosing agent, is injected into the veins. Sclerotherapy is the most utilized therapy for varicose veins in the country. Most patients who have sclerotherapy will be cleared of their varicosities or at least see substantial improvement (see pictures below).

What should I expect during Sclerotherapy treatments in Weymouth MA?

After cleansing the area to be treated, your doctor will use a fine needle to slowly insert a solution into the vein. The solution (typically polidocanol or sotradecol), usually in liquid or foam form, works by irritating the lining of the vein, causing it to swell shut and block the flow of blood. Eventually, the vein will scar and disappear.

How many treatments will be needed?

The number of Sclerotherapy treatments in Weymouth MA needed depends on the size and extent of varicose and spider veins present. One to 6 or more treatments may be needed; the average is 3 to 4. Improvement is usually seen over a period of months, not weeks. Dr. Kroumpouzos discusses the recommended aftercare prior to the procedure.
