Acne

GK Dermatology provides South Weymouth MA acne treatment. We service clients in South Shore MA and Greater Boston.

Acne is a disease of the sebaceous (oil) gland which is connected to a hair-containing canal called a follicle. The sebaceous gland produces an oily substance, called sebum, which reaches the surface by emptying through the opening of the follicle (pore). Acne starts when the pores become plugged (blackheads and whiteheads) through accumulation of oil, hair and other cells that produces a blockage or plug. The mixture of oil and cells, trapped behind the plug, helps bacteria in the follicle to grow and produce chemicals and enzymes that cause inflammation-the end result is the formation of a pimple.

Hormonal factors, such as puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, or starting or stopping birth control pills might be culprits. Furthermore, imbalance of the hormonal system due to ovarian, adrenal or pituitary disease can cause acne. Certain medications can also cause acne. Remember that acne is not caused by poor hygiene. Although some people find that certain foods make their acne worse, dermatologists have differing opinions on the importance of diets. Cosmetic products that are not oil-free can also cause or worsen acne.
