Shingles
GK Dermatology offers South Weymouth MA shingles treatment.
What is Shingles?
Shingles, also known as herpes zoster or zoster, is caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV). It is a re-activation of a latent chickenpox infection you get when younger – the virus stays in the body and travels to the nerves where it lies dormant. Significant stress, serious illness/injury and a weak immune system increase the risk of getting shingles because they can lead to virus reactivation. Shingles always affects one side of the body only in a localized area (dermatome). This painful rash progresses to blistering that evolves into dark scabs, and takes several weeks to resolve. It can cause permanent scarring. The most bothersome symptom of shingles is the associated pain that often manifests as burning sensation and can last longer than the rash (post-herpetic neuralgia).
South Weymouth MA Shingles Treatment
South Weymouth MA shingles treatment consists of an antiviral medicine and is most effective if started within the first 72 hours from the onset of the rash. Treatment may not always speed up resolution of the rash but decreases the risk of complications such as post-herpetic neuralgia. The shingles vaccine is indicated for persons 60 years of age or older who have had chickenpox. The vaccine lowers the risks of getting shingles and reduces the risk of developing complications.
